Joshua Tree 2-20-10

February 27, 2010

The high winds continued with a bit of rain overnight. Breakfast was eggs again and we went light on lunch, with too many bars left and a neglected slice of turkey that ended up in the trash. We took Tim’s recommendation to head up to the White Cliff’s Of Dover. We parked at trashcan rock and trekked across the desert and up the cliff to Popular Mechanics, 5.9. This was a nice route on solid rock up a corner to a bolted rap station. I lead the climb clean and cold. The crux is low down and protected with a small cam, black alien size, surely with other options.  After that Brian headed up the Make or Break (5.10b) Flake, battled the burly chimney down low and skirted the slab up high. We TR’d Quest for Fire (5.11b) which features a gnarly finger crack/crimp line with poor foot options. The tall can reach the positive “jug” atop the crack with a low foot but I thrashed to get to it. Brian cleaned the anchor and we headed down to the Baskervilles. I lead right Baskerville Crack (5.10a), as fun as exorcist and featuring great finger locks above the crux.

We walked around the old Sheep’s Corral and looked at the trash and old pins with remnants of barbwire.  After Russ climbed the route, Brian again cleaned the anchor and walked down the baskside of the formation.  We drank a beer at the car and watched some gumbies learn to lead and climb on Trash Can rock.

From there we headed back to Hemmingway, Brian lead White Lightning, a spectacular and long 5.7. I cleaned the route, pulled the rope up and rapped off bolts to the right. Brian and Russ hung out at the base and listened to some girl ramble about her worldview, masturbation, and child rearing.

We packed up the car and headed back to Crossroads café. The Tempeh Ruben was great.  We headed back after a quick stop at Vons and topping the water off for Russ.  We sorted all the gear, cleaned the car and packed up for our departure in the morning. We made a last ditch effort to finish the Jim Beam and I had an Arrogant Bastard over the fire.  Ah, last night in the Snowshoe.
